Affordable HousinG

Incentives for Retirees

Why

In line with the BPA’s core ethos;

“To create a social and economic environment in which the citizens of Australia are Occupied and are able to Prosper”

Affordable housing is an ongoing and persistent problem that we, as a society must somehow resolve.

With a rapidly aging Population we need to come up with innovative ideas to try and provide affordable accommodation for this new wave of Australian Citizens on the Aged Pension.

To this end we believe that the best people who could assist with this problem are the very people who we need to accommodate- people over the retirement age.

There are many people out there, over the retirement age who own their own homes.

For this group we would encourage them to take on tenants who are on a part or full Aged pension and provide them with accommodation by renting out their spare rooms.

The rent collected will be Tax exempt.

There will be special legislation passed to ensure that the safety of all stakeholders is first and paramount when providing this style of accommodation.

It will only be available to people over the retirement age who rent out rooms to people on an Aged (Full or Part) Pension.

This program is totally voluntary and there will be no pressure asserted on anyone to provide this service.

The benefits are;

  1. Although it will be accessed by a reasonably small percentage of the eligible community, every person housed is one less the government needs to accommodate.
  2. By sharing their home it will bring companionship and support to all concerned.
  3. By having the extra tax free income it allows the provider with additional income to maintain their homes and thereby remain in their own homes longer.
  4. By having multiple persons residing in the same residence it would reduce the demand on government provided services.

This incentive scheme is not a "CURE ALL", but a partial remedy is better than no remedy at all.
