Redundancy Policy

Navigating through change........

This policy applies to Government employees who are made redundant as a direct result of a “Focus Vote”

It is inevitable that with change, especially with rapid change in community expectations, that there will be some departments or positions within departments that will become redundant.

It is critical to understand that the people involved and affected are real people, not faceless bureaucrats without families, fears and expectations.

Meaningful change takes time; a long term view of the situation must be adopted so we do not make knee jerk decisions when adopting new directions or policies.

We need the Government employees to remain in their positions for the duration so as any transitions can be handled correctly and with consistency.

To enable this to happen it will be our policy to offer 3 year Redundancy Packages.

These redundancy packages will only be available where;

  1. The employee was employed in their position prior to the Focus Vote taking place, or has been promoted within the same department post "Focus Vote".
  2. The employee remains in their position until the official date of redundancy.
  3. The employee has secured alternative employment*(within 3 months) after being made redundant and that employment pays less than the redundant position. Or
  4. The employee has commenced Full Time Tertiary** studies in an approved*** course.

Providing the employee has complied with these options then the Government will pay to the employee the difference between the outgoing salary and the post redundancy earnings for a period of three years.

** It is expected that wherever possible the employee will work part time during the course and successfully completes each semester.

*** An approved course will be identified as a “Core” course where there is an identified demand for graduates as employees.

* Employment must be bona fide where the employee is receiving the correct salary for the task and does not include self-employment.
